Chapter 18

When the blare of the air horn sounded, Apollo darted out of sight. Once he’d circled back around, he peered into the clearing where the two cars were parked. He clenched his fists when he spotted the real estate logo and phone number plastered on one of the cars. Then he pulled out his phone and snapped a picture. Was she thinking about selling? He ran his fingers through his hair. Time to ramp up his efforts and delay tactics.

He stepped away and placed a call to Cosmo.

“Boss, I was just about to call you and give you my report. Liz must have left town for a bit, but now she’s back. She and that guy pulled up to the house earlier and unloaded a big suitcase. Looks like she might be in town for a while.”

“I want you back at the compound,” Apollo whispered. “There’s been a change in plans.”

Apollo shook his head. As if he didn’t have enough problems. That damn woman kept showing up on his sacred ground. If she sold out to some developer, his whole world could come crashing down.

Sequestered back in his office, Apollo furiously jotted down ideas to deter a potential sale. Wife number four rapped on the door. “Sir, you have a visitor.”

“Don’t waste words woman. Who is it?” he bellowed.

“A female cop. Says she needs to see you.”

He hoped the cop was here to report she’d found Peanut dead on the side of the road. His Mission Apollo badge would connect him to the compound. After he’d flipped the legal pad over, he said, “Send her in.”

Sam strode in and offered her hand. Apollo wiped his sweaty palms on his pants before he accepted.

“How can I help you?” he asked.

“I understand you’ve paid a few visits to a piece of property on the coast.” She rattled off the address.

“May have. I don’t remember.” He cleared his throat. “Is there a problem?”

Sam placed her hands on her hips. “It’s private property. You’re trespassing.”

His body tensed as if he might pounce if further provoked.

“I’m here to warn you,” she continued. “Stay off or you’ll be charged with trespassing.” Sam turned and exited, nearly colliding with Cosmo. He started to say something about the dog finding the scent, but the look on Apollo’s face stopped him. He’d wait until the cop was out of earshot before he reported the news.

Minutes later, Atlas arrived, and Apollo ushered them into the conference room and shut the door. The silence was deafening as Apollo gathered his thoughts. Cosmo and Atlas stood rigid and awaited direction.

They both jumped when Apollo bellowed “sit” and nearly tripped over each other before taking their places. Apollo commanded from the head of the conference table. “Peanut has accomplished the unthinkable. He managed to escape and return to the streets. This is unacceptable, and we must not let anyone else here know.” His electric blue eyes bore into each of their faces. “Understood?”

“Yes, sir.” They replied in unison.

“Atlas, wait until dark, then fetch one of the wooden coffins.
